Yummy Peanut Butter and Jelly | Lesson plan |

One of our activities for kindergarten that we do the second week of school is become a book expert. It was a matter of collecting some found objects from my classroom and making a free item. Once they learn how to do this center expectations and such and we continue learning how to retell stories, my kinders get to choose the book s they want to retell while they are at this literacy center. They read, they act, they use lots of great vocabulary and are developing fantastic reading habits all while continuing to build their love of reading. Plus, every student can hold a peanut or a few grapes since there are plenty which gives everyone something to hold while we retell it as a class. Here are the props I gathered rather inexpensively and you can too to bring the book alive once we knew it by heart. I had an apron that I bought from the dollar store in my art cupboard and relocated it here permanently.

Peanut Butter and Jelly #3 By: Ben Clanton (A Narwhal and Jelly Book)

March is National Peanut Month!

Giving clear, concise instructions to others is an important skill for children to learn. In this game, students will practice using descriptive vocabulary, communicating ideas to others, recognizing steps in a process and recognizing the importance of the use of clear language. Gather the necessary materials. Ask your students if they have ever followed a recipe before. What kinds of things have they made?

Today's lesson is about listening skills and responding to the text. This story may be new to a few students but a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is not new. They have probably made a sandwich themselves at home. I will try not to give much help in the writing of the sentences, they are at a place now where they just need prompting with a small amount of modeling. Picture details is what I have to prompt them to add. The more details they put in their drawing the more I know they understood the story. Writing and speaking skills are important CCSS skills.
