Most of us enjoy a good read, whether it is a novel that moves us to tears, a play that intrigues or a poem that rouses our passions, a piece of well-written literature can have an impact on our emotions, on our behaviour and on our value-systems. There are very few of us who can recall a piece of writing verbatim. There are specific quotes however, that stay with us. These can be useful in a variety of situations; from quiz to job interview, being or appearing to be well read can hold you in good stead. Here are a few examples.

Inside, the floor space dedicated to books was roughly a quarter of that taken up by kilims, cactuses and Lego sets. In the hour we spent talking, customers came in to buy watch batteries, a condolence card, wrapping paper and a compass. Not a single person bought a book. When I failed to persuade any of the women I knew to form a book club they found the suggestion precious and downright impractical, given Tehran traffic , I began to wonder why books figured so little in the lives of my otherwise intellectually curious friends. But during the long afternoons I spent exploring the cramped storefront shops attached to the publishing houses on Karim Khan-e Zand Street, I grew to understand their reluctance. By and large, the books Iranians seemed to be reading did not lend themselves to discussion, except with a therapist. Self-help books and their eclectic offshoots, on topics like Indian spirituality and feng shui, enjoy the most prominent position on bookstore front tables.

Fall is officially here and it's quite possibly one of my favorite seasons for reading. Themed books, cozy reading sessions, and tons of new releases make fall one of the best times of year for book lovers. Nothing too scary, mind you, since I'm a giant baby when it comes to anything frightening. Here's what I plan on reading next month Rebecca Why it's on my list: Not exactly scary, Rebecca is described as a "classic tale of romantic suspense". I've been wanting to read this Gothic classic for years and decided now is the time.
