Islam and the Future of Tolerance — Sam Harris, Maajid Nawaz | Harvard University Press

In this short book, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? Remarkable for the breadth and depth of its analysis, this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical is all the more startling for its decorum. Harris and Nawaz have produced something genuinely new: they engage one of the most polarizing issues of our time—fearlessly and fully—and actually make progress. Islam and the Future of Tolerance has been published with the explicit goal of inspiring a wider public discussion by way of example. In a world riven by misunderstanding and violence, Harris and Nawaz demonstrate how two people with very different views can find common ground.

Islam & The Future Of Tolerance

The book has been subsequently adapted into a documentary film of the same tile. The book is in dialogue format, and features an exchange between Harris, an atheist and a critic of religion, and Nawaz, an Islamist -turned- liberal activist. The book is published with the explicit purpose of furthering difficult conversations about Islam without "devolving into bigotry or caricature". The Economist , in its review, called it "a short but intensive dialogue" and noted that "at times, Mr Nawaz is disarmingly frank. Harris is politely sceptical.

Civilization has a civility problem. This I learned long before Donald Trump. More recently, the novelist Salman Rushdie chastised me on Twitter for suggesting that even atheists worship something. Defending the value of doubt through crude certitude is a sign of our times. How refreshing, then, to read an honest yet affectionate exchange between the Islamist-turned-liberal-Muslim Maajid Nawaz and the neuroscientist who advocates mindful atheism, Sam Harris. Their back-and-forth clarifies multiple confusions that plague the public conversation about Islam. We learn the difference between Islam and Islamism, as well as the fascinating distinctions among political Islamists, revolutionary Islamists and militant Islamists.

Forcing it into flame will doubtless be a long time coming, but these two men should be lauded for endeavoring to provide a spark.
