Centre for Science, Technology, Society studiesIt is largely by technology that contemporary society hangs together. It is hugely important not only as an economic force but also as a cultural force. Indeed during the last two centuries, when it gradually emerged as a discipline, philosophy of technology has mostly been concerned with the meaning of technology for, and its impact on, society and culture, rather than with technology itself. Only recently a branch of the philosophy of technology has developed that is concerned with technology itself and that aims to understand both the practice of designing and creating artifacts in a wide sense, including artificial processes and systems and the nature of the things so created. This latter branch of the philosophy of technology seeks continuity with the philosophy of science and with several other fields in the analytic tradition in modern philosophy, such as the philosophy of action and decision-making, rather than with the humanities and social science.

Like most interdisciplinary programs, STS emerged from the confluence of a variety of disciplines and disciplinary subfields, all of which had developed an interest—typically, during the s or s—in viewing science and technology as socially embedded enterprises. Science, Technology and Society Studies STS is an interdisciplinary research field concerned with how science and technology shapes and affects society and vice versa. The field has existed for roughly 50 years and emphasizes empirical studies of science and technology as practices. The field of STS draws on extensive resources such as constructivism, post structuralism, process philosophy, social anthropology, critical theory, actor network theory, feminist studies, ethnography, work place studies, phenomenology and others. At the centre, STS forms a methodological and conceptual resource for studying the role of technology and especially IT in a range of everyday and work life settings. STS helps us attend to the more or less visible and trivial aspects of the interaction between human actors and technologies.

Technology is frequently considered in terms of its impact on entities outside its essential nature: as the impact of technology on the environment and society, but also the impact of human values and needs on technology. By taking particular social implications of technology into account, the Science—Technology relationship can be extended to the field of Science, Technology and Society STS studies. STS studies are grounded in socio-technological understanding, that is, systematic knowledge of the mutual relationship between technical objects, the natural environment and social practice. Because technology is a key element of STS, it is expected that the philosophy of technology will have implications for STS studies. The dynamic nature of technology as such leaves its own philosophy in a tentative or flexible state. However, the implications of the philosophy of technology, being in a development phase at the moment with changes in emphasis occuring, for STS studies ought to be determined continuously.
